Elbow Jane and Mike Silver

Concordia, Cramlington was definitely the place to be on Friday night. We had an absolutely great night of music from Elbow Jane and Mike Silver.

Elbow Jane describe themselves as a traditional 5-piece acoustic band comprising guitars, mandolin, bass, percussion, piano and bazouki; they sing mostly their own songs with beautifully crafted lyrics and easily accessible tunes. They also included a few classic standards. Both vocals and harmonies were excellent. Not only are Elbow Jane good singers but they are great entertainers with their humour permeating out into the audience. It was clear that they were enjoying their music and allowing the audience to share in their pleasure.

Mike Silver was the support artist, if one could call him that, as he is an outstanding singer in his own right. He is a good friend of Cramlington Folk Club and his songs are well known there. His spot did not disappoint us!

And as I won the raffle prize of an Elbow Jane CD, my night was complete!!

Don’t miss Elbow Jane in a venue near you, although as they have a long list of venues in other parts of the country, it may be a while before they are around here again. Hopefully not too long!!

During the 30 or so years of my involvement with Cramlington Folk Club there have been many many good nights, many great nights and quite a few really great and magical nights - Friday 20th February 2009 was one such night. From the moment Mike Silver stepped onto the stage to open the night one had the feeling this is going to be a special night and Mike did not disappoint. He gave his usual polished performance and soon had the audience singing along warming up the audience very well for what was to follow.

A few in the audience had seen and heard Elbow Jane before but the majority had not with one or two saying they did not know what to expect. Boy were they more than pleasantly surprised. Elbow Jane took to the stage and gave us a night of the highest quality of musicianship, magical vocal skills and delightful three part harmonies that left every one asking for more and when can they return. All too soon it was time to end, but not before an encore and what a choice. After an emotional introduction from Rich and Kevin, Mike joined the boys to sing one of his songs, 'Pretoria'. This was a great way to end this magical night and received a standing ovation.

Mike Silver was heard to say this is the best gig I have seen in the last 15 years.
