13 September 2005 Reviewer: Keith Guests: Stewart Hardy (fiddle) and Frank McLaughlin (guitar & pipes) Support: Jimmy & Carol Jimmy and Carol got the night off to a good start with a Steve Earl song 'The Pilgrim'. The Cramlington choir were in fine form from the very first song. They ended their first set with Carol taking the lead on 'Palomino Pony'. It was now time for 3 songs from Esther, the 2nd a traditional Scottish song she thought the audience might not know - but they did and the chorus singing was super. Esther finished off with 'One More Cup Of Coffee', not literally but a fine vocal rendition. Stewart started the guest spot with a reference to a laid back audience re Esther's Cup of Coffee (it turns out he is a coffee addict). We were treated to some of the best fiddle music to be heard at the club for a long time all with a superb guitar accompaniment. There were compositions from James Hill and Robert Bewick, as well as originals from both Frank and Stewart. Then Frank played a set of tunes on the Scottish Lowland Pipes (he told us they were designed for smokers - work that one out). A few more tunes on fiddle and guitar and it was time for a break. 2 songs from Jimmy and Carol got us underway once more. They finished the set with 'Indian Man' by Rosemary Woods. 2 more from Esther, she chose 'John Of Dreams' to close her set - a wonderful version. Guest time again... The duo started off with 'A Wedding March' and 'The Hanged Man's Jig' - this had everyone's feet tapping. Then more from the pen of James Hill, and then Frank played a set of pipe tunes on guitar this time. A few more on fiddle and guitar and all too soon it was time to go. It was a bit of a gamble to have a guest with no vocals but, thanks to 2 great musicians, it WORKED. Keith |
