jiva With Keith Taylor really on holiday, Allan Savage was in charge of this
singers night. It seemed quiet with some regular faces missing but he still
managed to squeeze in 10 performers and 29 songs and tunes!
Allan began proceedings with two Scottish songs ‘Gallowa Hills’, ‘Skyline of
Skye’ and the Irish ‘Black Velvet Band’ warming the Cramlington choir up very
nicely for Ken Cross who sang the classic Tom Paxton song ‘Last Thing On My
Mind’. He followed this with ‘Paddy McGinty's Goat’ (a hit for Val Doonican)
which raised a few laughs, and a song about Amsterdam called ‘Red Rose Café’.
Then jiva sang two self-penned songs ‘Remember The Music’ and ‘The Cause’ and
the Melanie Safka song ‘Christmas Lullaby’. Back from his holidays, Dave Page
sang 'Rambles Of Spring' and 'The Tyree Love Song'. He then had Allan Savage and
Ken Cross join him for a rousing ‘Ye Jacobites By Name’. Mike Hughes began his
set with an unaccompanied version of ‘Pleasant & Delightful’. Then with guitar
sang the John Watt song ‘Owt For Nowt’ finishing the 1st half with ‘The West's
Awake’, an Irish rebellion song.
After a short break and a raffle newcomer to the Club Ken Wilcock, got the 2nd
half underway. He played 3 fine instrumental pieces on his steel resonator
guitar. Terry Fletcher was up next with ‘Love's Sweet Flame’ followed by ‘When
Did It All Go Right’, a great new song he had written about talentless
celebrities. He ended with the Loudon Wainwright song ‘Save My Life’. Then we
had some fine singing from Esther Marshall who sang whose varied set included
‘Take My Breath Away’ (Queen), ‘Mountains of Mourne’ (traditional) and Leonard
Cohen's ‘Dance Me To The End Of Love’. Jim Wigfield did two self-penned songs,
the humorous ‘What A Dilemma’ and the very harrowing and thought provoking ‘Do
We Know You?’ To finish the night John Redpath and Gerry Tapscott gave us the
Richard Thompson song ‘When I Get To The Border’, then ‘I Don’t Want To Talk
About It’, and finally ‘From A Distance’ by Julie Gold.
And thanks to Dave Page who did a great job on the sound.
