Reviewer: Ken & Jane
Despite the foul weather, the 'dedicated followers of music' (quote from Keith Taylor) turned up for a singers night. First on was Jim who, in a reflective mood, gave us 2 of his own compositions - 'Fruity Teas' and 'In Need Of Specs'! Dave and John followed this with 3 well chosen favourites - 'Big Yellow Taxi', 'Ponies' and 'Nothing To Show For It All'. Allan Savage (despite a head injury!) bravely got up and sang 'Air Fa La La Lo' and 'McPherson's Rant'. Allan was then joined by Jimmy on the bass for a rendition of 'Roddy McCorley'. Peter Cook paid a long overdue visit to the club and, sporting a distinctive silver 'f' hole dobro guitar, played a lively set of tunes ('Brownsville', 'Take A look At Yourself' and 'San Francisco Bay') enhanced by John Baston's excellent harmonica playing. After the interval, and a rather risque joke from Keith, Sue delighted us with her guitar playing and singing. She sang 'Once I Knew A Pretty Girl', 'House Carpenter' and 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes'. Keith explained that Ken and Jane were reviewing the evening and then Ken got up to sing leaving Jane to review his part of the proceedings. This was a signal for some cheap jibes at Jane's expense - all taken in good part? Ken sang 'Leaving On A Jet Plane', 'Sound Of Silence' and 'What's The Use Of Wings' - the latter as a request for John Gibson. John Baston played and sang 'Career Moves' followed by an instrumental 'Windy And Warm' and was joined by Peter, John and Jim for Dylan's 'I'll Be Your Baby Tonight' which was warmly received by the Cramlington choir. Jimmy and Carol finished the night with Peter guesting again. Their first song was 'Old Flames Can't Hold A Candle' and then Carol sang 'Wayfaring Stranger'. The evening ended with a rousing version of 'House Of The Rising Sun' including a guest appearance on the double bass by John Redpath (hidden talents, eh?). Keith thanked everyone who took part, John and Dave on sound, and reminded us all that it was Robin Laing next week. Another good night of varied music. Ken and Jane |
