Guest: Cathryn Craig and Brian Willoughby

Support: Jimmy & Carol
Support: Ken Cross

Jimmy and Carol (with Allan Savage playing banjo off stage) began the night with an interesting mix including songs from the Seeger sessions and the Carter family. Ken Cross quietened things solo while mixing pop with contemporary and traditional folk songs.

The guests tonight were in great form, starting with a guitar-themed song which was the perfect vehicle to showcase Brian's wizardry on his Gibson acoustic and Cathryn's wistful vocals. Cathryn told us stories of her life and family and how some of the songs came to be written, including 'Aunt Genevieve' and 'Alice's Song' (a firm favourite of ours with Brian changing over to nylon strung guitar). They closed their first half with hard-hitting American subject material - the real 'Pocahontas' story featuring Brian on his resonator guitar and Cathryn with shakers on the wrist! Wow!

Jimmy and Carol (again with Allan Savage off stage) got the second half underway, followed by Ken Cross accompanied by Jimmy Powells on double bass and Allan Savage on banjo - Keith nicknamed them Ken & The Prairie Dogs... he'll run out of names for all these impromptu scratch bands one of these days!

Brian started the second guest set playing an instrumental track from his 'Fingers Crossed' album - he even found time for some anecdotes and a couple of jokes before Cathryn joined him on stage. 'Two Hearts, One Love' had the Cramlington Choir in fine voice, Cathryn commenting how she loved their singing. More gentle songs followed before they stepped up the pace to close with 'I Will' which displayed more guitar dexterity from Brian.

But, of course, it didn't end there - after great applause and shouts for more they encored with an extended version of 'Cotton Fields'.

A great night - American/English blended to produce a distinctive and very enjoyable sound.
